Rabbit hay: the everyday choice
Hay is the foundation of the diet of rabbits and other small herbivores. It provides the long fibres essential for healthy digestion, keeps your companion busy throughout the day and supports proper dental wear. At Haynest, we select rich, varied meadows and pack our hay in practical sizes, so you receive fragrant, clean and tasty rabbit hay.
Why hay is essential
A rabbit needs free access to quality fibre, 24/7. A regular supply keeps the digestive system active, limits slowdowns and helps keep bedding cleaner. For the teeth, constant chewing is essential: long strands encourage natural grinding, which supports oral comfort. This applies to dwarf rabbits, lop-eared rabbits and larger breeds alike.
Our method: controlled harvesting and careful drying
We work to one simple standard: preserving the plants' fragrance and fibre content. The grass is cut at the right stage of maturity, then dried gradually. This keeps a lovely colour and a meadow scent, and produces forage that is pleasant to eat, free from excess moisture and more stable in storage.
Clean hay with less dust
Dust can irritate the airways of sensitive animals, which is why we pay particular attention to sorting and packing (done by hand). Our aim is to offer you cleaner rabbit hay: we keep impurities to a minimum and preserve long, structured strands. The result: a more appetising hay rack and a more comfortable living space.
Which hay should you choose for your rabbit?
Not all hays are alike. In this collection you'll find several profiles to suit different preferences and needs:
Provençal meadow hay: versatile, fragrant, ideal for everyday feeding.
Premium Crau Hay: known for its consistency, richness and palatability.
If your companion sorts its hay a lot, alternating textures can revive its interest: offer softer strands or more stems — a mix often works very well. Also vary the feeding spots: hay rack, snuffle mat, or a small handful in a hay box.
How much should you give each day?
The simple rule: the hay rack should always be full. The idea isn't to weigh it to the gram but to make sure your pet always has something to nibble. Good hay should make up the largest part of what it eats — 80% of its daily diet — ahead of pellets and treats. Complete with suitable treats and fresh water, then adjust to activity, age and size.
Tips for a smooth transition
When changing hay, mix the old and the new over several days and keep an eye on appetite, droppings and general behaviour. Good hay is recognisable by its fresh smell and by visible strands rather than crumbs; it should be dry, with long green strands. If your pet drinks a little less with greener hay, that's often normal — but water must of course always be available.
Storage: keeping the taste of the meadow
To preserve the aroma, store your bags in a dry, ventilated place out of direct sunlight. Avoid damp rooms (cellar, laundry room) and reseal after use. Well-stored rabbit hay keeps its texture, scent and nutritional value for longer — at least 6 months without any problem.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best hay for a rabbit?
Green, fragrant, varied hay with very little dust, available at all times. Meadow hay is perfect for everyday feeding; Premium Crau Hay is the benchmark for its balance and palatability, even for fussy rabbits.
Meadow hay or Premium Crau Hay: which should I choose?
Meadow hay is ideal for everyday feeding thanks to its balance of long fibres, which support healthy digestion and the natural wear of teeth. Premium Crau Hay, renowned for its exceptional quality, is richer and very palatable — perfect for fussy rabbits. The right choice depends on your companion's age, weight and needs.
How much hay should I give per day?
As much as they like, day and night: hay makes up 80 to 90% of a rabbit's diet. A simple rule of thumb: a volume of hay roughly the size of its body each day, refreshed daily even if some is left.
How should I store hay?
In a dry, well-ventilated place away from light, ideally in a cardboard box or kraft bag — never in a sealed plastic bag, which traps moisture. Once opened, a pack is best used within 2 to 3 months.
